MORRIS AREA WOMEN MORE THAN HOLD THEIR OWN

Morris Area women may have out-medaled the Morris area men in the USATF-NJ long distance running grand prix. Jeanne Pare of Mendham, as was reported here last week, was the overall women's winner of the New Balance Grand Prix, which is the granddaddy of the three separate series.

Karyn Layton of Rockaway, who won the 34 and under age category in 2005, aged up to the W35 division in 2006 and capped her season with a win. Maria Bruno of Boonton placed second to Layton. Diane Ross of Flanders placed third in the Mini One grand prix and second in Mini Two.

Julie Corbin of Mendham placed second in the W40 division, dropping from her first in 2005. Julie Amsallen of Lake Hopatcong was third in the Mini One in that division and second in the Mini Two.

All of the top three women in the W45 division were from Morris County. Sherrie Felton of Bedminster won the division, with Pam Fales of Boonton second and Eva Fisher, also of Boonton third. Felton traded places with Fales in the Mini One where Fales took first, but Felton reigned supreme in the Mini Two.

To no one's surprise, Jane Parks of Morristown won the W50 division as she has won her division every year since 1995. Parks also won in the Mini One and Mini Two grand prix.

Betty Shonts of Morris Township is also a many time winner and did so again in the W55 division. Christine Ange of Rockaway placed third. Ange ruled in both the Mini One and Mini two, while Betty Langenkamp of Wharton placed second in the Mini Two and third in Mini One.

Lorrie Brnic of Towaco finished in third in the Mini One Grand Prix in the W60 division.

Shirley Pettijohn of Chatham won the W70 group in the NBGP as well as the Mini Two. She took second in Mini One. Diane Stone of Bernardsville placed third in the Mini One. Patricia Tummey of Randolph, was second in the W75 division of the NBGP.

All of the top men and women have been invited to the USATF-New Jersey Awards Banquet that will be held next Saturday, the 20th at the Pines Manor in Edison.

MARATHON ENTRY CONTEST 127 words

Who among you marathoners would like to run in the North Pole Marathon coming up on April 15th? Who would like to win a free entry to the North Pole Marathon along with a trip to said marathon - worth roughly $12,000.00?

Have I got your attention? There is a catch - you must be capable of writing about the experience to be published by the folks who are offering the free entry.

At the North Pole Marathon, runners will find an aid station and a warmed tent every two miles. In fact it will be the same aid station as the course is thirteen two-mile loops running on what is basically the ice cap of the North Pole. Depending on snow and ice conditions, marathon entrants will run in either trail shoes or lightweight snowshoes.

If you'd like to run the North Pole Marathon check it out at http://www.npmarathon.com/ . If you think you can write about your experience check out the contest at www.yourrunning.com. Don't delay as the contest deadline is January 31st, just a little over two weeks from now.
